Numbers were decimated by plume hunters in late 1800's. No reported sightings in Florida 1927-1937. Numbers are gradually increasing under complete protection. Feeding behavior was very active and entertaining. Often running through shallows with head tilted. Raising wings to create a shaded area. I assumed the wings cut the glare making it easier to see the small fish but Audubon says the fish seek shelter in the shaded area.
